Mild or Wild? And I am not talking about hot sauce! Live edge slabs are organic as organic gets. What is a live edge slab? A live edge slab is a piece of wood cut from a log where the natural edge of the tree, including the bark, is left intact, showcasing the organic shape and grain pattern of the wood, giving it a rustic and unique appearance; essentially, it’s a wood slab that retains the tree’s original outer edge, rather than having a squared-off straight edge on all sides. So, where does the “hot sauce” come in? Keep reading!
From the Beginning…

Our custom furniture journey begins with reclaimed logs at our Goshen, NY workshop, an hour north of Westchester County. We transform these majestic trees into two-inch thick live edge slabs. Subsequently, we prepare these slabs for a two-year drying period. This step is critical for preventing warping. Following this extended drying, we place the slabs in our kiln to eliminate residual moisture. Once the wood reaches an 8% moisture content, it’s ready for crafting into a finished masterpiece.
The Mild Live Edge

Now, let’s clarify: “mild” and “wild” refer to the natural live edges, not condiments. Firstly, a “mild” live edge, as seen in the top picture, offers a subtle variation. This option suits those seeking a unique yet functional table. Mild edges resemble straight edges, with only about an inch of variance. Consequently, they offer a clean look with a touch of natural charm.
The Wild Live Edge

In contrast, the wild live edge is my favorite option. Indeed, there is a lot of variation in the natural live edge. For instance, as you can see, the table featured above has several bump outs that extend several inches outward. Therefore, the wild live edge slabs will make the perfect table for those wanting a bold statement piece. However, I often find many people are intimidated by the wild live edge in terms of functionality; nevertheless, I can assure you once seated at the table, a wild live edge slab will provide the same functionality as a mild live edge slab. And furthermore, trust me, I really know because the above table is my dining table! 🙂
